Overview

This course will explain charity finance for those from a non-financial background. By the end of the day, participants will have more understanding and greater confidence when working with budgets and accounts. This session will cover:

  • The background of charity accounting including funds, reserves and legal requirements
  • The difference between statutory and management accounts
  • How to interpret accounts (practical examples)
  • Teach managers how to prepare a budget and consider cash flow implications
  • How to use management accounts and monitor performance
  • An introduction to controls and managing risk.

Who should attend?
Managers new to budget holding, fundraisers and project managers in charities.

Each session will be around 75 minutes long with a practical activity built in to the session. These will be varied to keep it interesting and fun.

Attendees will receive a pack including:

  • Reading charity accounts made simple
  • SORP 2015 made simple
  • Copies of slides used in the session

Programmes/Presentations

10.00 Registration and refreshments
10.15 Charities are different to commercial organisations. So how do you judge performance? Reading a set of accounts and understanding the fundamentals such as fund accounting and underlying principles of accounting.
11.30 Break
11.45 Preparing budgets, understanding different types of costs, full cost recover and cash flow implications. Presenting new proposals and budget information, including projects budgets.
13.00 Lunch
13.30 Using management accounts and monitoring performance. Explaining variances and re-forecasting.
14.45 Break
15.00 What's the purpose of controls? Fun quiz to explore why organisations have policies and procedures, ethical purchasing and fraud prevention. Purpose of financial audits and providing audit trails.
16.15 Summary and final questions
16.30 Close

Written notice of cancellations up to 21 days before an event will incur a 25% administration fee. After this time period, a 100% cancellation charge will apply. Substitutions (i.e. name changes) for the course booked can be made free of charge.

CFG reserves the right to cancel any event two weeks prior to the event date. You will be entitled to a full refund or given the opportunity to transfer to an alternative date. However we regret that we cannot refund any travel or accommodation costs incurred by delegates. CFG accepts no liability if an event is cancelled or postponed for reasons beyond our reasonable control resulting from an act of God, governmental regulation, fire, war, terrorist activity or civil commotion.

It may be necessary for reasons beyond our control to change the date, time or the venue at any time prior to the event date. If this occurs you will be informed of changes and given the opportunity to cancel or transfer to an alternative date.
