Catch up with new trends in information systems management with the 2011 CFDG IT Conference. As ever, this promises to be a lively and informative day. We have put together a programme that we hope you will find both interesting and challenging. The key underlying theme this year is the importance of using IT to help your organisation engage with its stakeholders. We will be looking primarily at those parts of the system that help interface with the outside world. As an FD responsible for IT, it is your responsibility to ensure that the IT function is seen as an enabler rather than just a cost-centre.

This year we have two streams. The first will look at the risks and opportunities of sharing information and the second stream will provide a series of charity case-studies that examine some of these themes in more detail. We have sessions that will look at the opportunities presented by the blossoming of social media in the past few years; at the benefits that can be achieved from moving IT services onto the Cloud; at some of the issues that you need to consider when considering outsourcing; and at the huge potential of the Personal Data Store.

We are sure the combination of strategic focus and technological trends will give you food for thought and help you understand the impact and implications of IT for your organisation.

The Reception

There will be an exhibition alongside the conference programme. Exhibitors working in a range of service areas will be available for delegates to meet, ask questions and share information.

The informal setting is an excellent opportunity to find products and service suppliers who can assist in tackling your charities’ problems and who can help to make the management of your charity more efficient.

Margaret Manning presents ‘the future of social media’ – from what social media means for an organisation now, to what the future holds and how you should be positioning your organisation to take advantage of these changes.

1B: Integration – the holy grail of technology

This session will look at how the CRM system, finance system and extranet can be integrated together so that information is only entered once and then flows to other parts of the system.  The session will be a live one, looking at processing of donations, processing of event bookings and processing of expenditure.

2A: Computers : the fraudsters friend?

In modern society, computers are everywhere. They're in your office, in your pocket, car, at home and most places in between. They have a well-publicised dark side - hackers, blackmail, phishing, fraud and sensitive data theft to name but a few ways that computers can cause sleepless nights. But it is not all one-sided. What do you do to protect yourself, aside from turning off the power?

2B: Maggie’s Cloud infrastructure

Glenn will present on the reasons why Maggie’s cancer caring centres have, over the past five years, moved from an internal fixed network to a fixed hosted server infrastructure and then recently to a total cloud solution for their whole enterprise.  Glenn will look at this paradigm shift in technology and its effect on the organisation.

3A: Personal Data

A progress report on personal data stores, a simple tech development that could revolutionise organisations' relationships with individual members.

3B: Business Transformation from the Inside – How and why the NSPCC moved from CharityShare

In 2009, the NSPCC implemented a multi-channel service for ChildLine using industrial strength call-centre and web technology.  Now, the Society is planning to deploy new IT systems to support Fundraising, Case Management and Volunteer Management.  This increased dependency on IT requires a highly resilient, 24x7 IT support infrastructure.  At the same time, the challenging economic environment demands a more robust service-driven, value-for-money approach to IT.  As a result, NSPCC’s IS management decided they would require a move to a commercial IT service provider.  Phil will talk about the drivers for this change and about the Society’s successful project to move the IT services.

4A: Information sharing in a virtual world: the challenges and opportunities facing the public and voluntary sectors

This session will cover the need to share information securely between public and voluntary sector services and the perceptions and reality around the limits to achieving this. It will focus on cloud computing now and in the future and the security, technical and legal dimensions to be considered in this increasingly virtual environment in which our organisations are operating.

4B: Steps to CRM Success

Each year charities and non-profits invest millions of pounds in new CRM systems and databases to help streamline processes and create a single record view of donors and supporters.  But how does an organisation know that a new system is what they need?  This session will look at some of the basic steps you should consider before rushing out to buy a new database, and also some of the key issues you should factor into decision making and planning.  This session would be particularly useful for small to medium sized organisations.

IT Decisions in difficult times

Over the last decade we had significant technology decisions being taken in an expectation of growth in the economy and potentially more charitable funds being made available. By the end of the the decade this fundamental plank was removed and we moved into cost efficiency or cost saving mode for technology. Seeing IT as a cost-centre is flawed as has been demonstrated by the success stories of recent times.

Written notice of cancellations up to 21 days before an event will incur a 25% administration fee. After this time period, a 100% cancellation charge will apply. Substitutions (i.e. name changes) for the course booked can be made free of charge.

CFG reserves the right to cancel any event two weeks prior to the event date. You will be entitled to a full refund or given the opportunity to transfer to an alternative date. However we regret that we cannot refund any travel or accommodation costs incurred by delegates. CFG accepts no liability if an event is cancelled or postponed for reasons beyond our reasonable control resulting from an act of God, governmental regulation, fire, war, terrorist activity or civil commotion.

It may be necessary for reasons beyond our control to change the date, time or the venue at any time prior to the event date. If this occurs you will be informed of changes and given the opportunity to cancel or transfer to an alternative date.
